The No Machine
A big red button that says no for you. Under the joke is a site that takes the hard part seriously, helping people say no and still feel good about it.

The idea
Most people know exactly what they want to say. The trouble is the half second between the question and the answer, when “sure, no problem” falls out on its own. The No Machine lives in that half second. Press the button, watch the reel spin, and walk away with an excuse, plus a reminder that no is a complete sentence.
It started as a weekend project with one button. It grew into a full site because the joke kept turning out to be useful.
The machine
- A slot-machine reel that spins through more than 1,000 excuses, from polite to unhinged.
- A believability meter that rates every excuse, from “pure audacity” to safe enough for Slack.
- A marquee with 32 light bulbs, click sounds, and light and dark modes. Nobody asked for the light bulbs. That’s the point.
- Copy, share, and a “recent nos” history that lives only in your browser.
- Eight situation machines, four guides to saying no, and an open API page for developers.
The heart
The machine is cheeky, but the “how to say no” guides are written with real care, for people who genuinely struggle to protect their time.
Credit where it’s due
The API page runs on No-as-a-Service, an open-source project by hotheadhacker, released under the MIT license. The machine, the excuses, the guides, and everything else on the site are mine.
